Welcome to Bellingen Community Markets 20 April 2024

Thanks for joining us and may you have the best market day !

The Autumn chill has arrived along with precarious weather; glorious one minute and stormy the next. Alas it does look like it clearing for Saturday, as it graciously does for our monthly event, that unites the community.  Maybe our collective positive thinking will help bring us a dry day. 🙂

As an all weather market we go ahead with rain. So if you have booked and got a site number, we expect to see you.  We only cancel if the grounds are unsafe, and this is always checked before the market. Any changes will be posted on Facebook. If you haven’t already LIKED and FOLLOW us please do so to receive notifications. Instagram too 🙂

Once again we have a fabulous, full market of incredible diversity with resilient, hardworking people at the helm. A big thanks to our stallholders for your positive contribution. Myself, crew  and committee value and appreciate your cool product/service and friendly ways, which help make our market the awesome place it is.

Food is always big on the agenda when visiting Bello Markets and we  are lucky to have a multicultural smorgasbord of delicious hot and cold food, drinks and coffee, along with a large selection of fresh local produce and homemade delicacies.

Music is by the very cool Funkatu who are presently on tour and take much delight is showcasing their new music with us. Our community group is the Chrysalis Steiner School and they have an exciting youth trip coming up and need our help to get there. They will be shaking the buckets at the gates.

Please continue to read the rest of our newsletter to learn more about our market.

Kind regards

Kaz Selbie

Funkatu

If you’re looking for tight, psychedelic bush funk then look no further.

FUNKATU is an original band who combine an eclectic fusion of reggae, soul, ska and hip-hop into a delightfully delicious explosion of funky goodness guaranteed to get your booty shakin’ . Featuring the unmistakable aussie songwriting of lyricist Louey Howell on drum kit and didgeridoo, Dan McCosker on de funky bass, Hannah Harlen on sweet vocals and electric guitar and Ahva Dub on synths and jazz bansuri. A great live act, this fresh outfit deliver the goods in style.

Louey Howell and the FUNKATU collective are hitting the road to promote the launch of their debut single “Funky bus”.

This song is about letting go of your inhibitions and having a good time. When we let our inhibitions fall away our individuality shines and that’s what makes us beautiful, our uniqueness, our character, the inner freak.  Funkatu want to see you set it free and shine! This first official release by the Bellingen Valley band known as Funkatu, has a tight rocking vibe.

They are touring this single till the wheels fall off.

You wont want to miss Funkatu on the main stage from 10am – 2.30pm.

Chrysalis Steiner School

Chrysalis Steiner School are our community group of the month and keen to raise funds which will be split 50 / 50 between Chrysalis and the community project at Mekginj Valley.

The school will use the funds to offset the cost of the trip to the school, ensuring that students have the opportunity to go in years to come. The more money raised the better quality our community work will be.

Mekginj Valley is an outstation close to Gunbalanya in Arnhem Land, NT. Connie and Alfred Nayinggul have asked us to come back to their country after last year’s group developed the grave site of their father Jacob.

This year our goal is to make an outdoor kitchen. Opening up their outstation to larger groups being able to visit and stay for cultural purposes and potentially tourism in the future.

We want to be able to make as big of an impact to this remote location as we possibly can. Tyrone, a local from Gunbalanya has donated one of his beautiful artworks to the school to say thank you for us coming up with our intentions, open minds and hearts. He doesn’t know that we are selling it as part of our fundraising. An incredible welcoming gesture.

Once the group have completed their community work they will; be exploring the Top End. Learning the old ways and seeing some of Australia’s wildest and unique country.

If you would like to simply donate some money to this cause please use our GoFundMe link:

Please support them at the gates as they welcome you with a friendly smile to Bellingen Community Markets.

Want to volunteer at Bellingen Show?

The Bellingen Show is on 4 and 5 May – less than a month away and the show committee is sending out an SOS for volunteers. Sadly there is a shortfall in the numbers of volunteers, particularly on the entry gates. There is a dedicated Gate Manager and a team of Gate Captains on hand to support the gate volunteers and address any issues that may arise at the gates. Show entry is free for volunteers. Please consider volunteering and spread the word to your friends and family. The contact email for volunteering is volunteers@bellingenshow.com.au

The sign-up section to choose your volunteering role and roster (on the gate) is via a show’s website: https://www.bellingenshow.com.au/volunteers/
